    Product Overview

The ZS09P Zero Speed Switch Sensor is a rugged, all-in-one motion detection system. It combines sensor and relay into one compact unit — no external control box is needed. Just aim the sensor at a rotating target (bolt head, key stock, flat washer, magnet, etc.) and wire it into your control circuit.

Designed for industrial environments, the ZS09P protects your equipment by detecting stopped or slowed shafts, belts, and other rotating parts. It’s commonly used on conveyors, elevators, augers, crushers, and mixers.

    Product Detail

The ZS09P Zero Speed Switch Sensor is designed for over speed, under speed, and zero speed monitoring in industrial equipment. It features an adjustable set point for precise and accurate shaft speed detection. This smart sensor protects conveyors, augers, bucket elevators, and other machinery by detecting when equipment slows down or stops unexpectedly — faster than pushing Emergency Stop!

The ZS09P Zero Speed Switch Sensor may resemble a standard proximity switch, but it features advanced speed sensing circuitry that goes beyond simple on/off detection. When the machine shaft speed reaches the adjustable set point, the ZS09P’s relay output changes state. It stays in this state until an under speed or zero speed condition is detected.

Phares Zero Speed Switch Sensors feature isolated relay contacts, making them easy to integrate into new installations, retrofit projects, or as direct replacements for obsolete zero speed switches in industrial control systems.

    Wiring & Installation

    Installation is simple:

    1. Mount the ZS09P sensor and aim at a rotating target such as a bolt head, key stock, flat washer, or magnet. When using a ferrous metal target, ensure it has a high iron content. Stainless steel and iron alloys are not suitable and will not trigger the sensor reliably.
    2. Connect relay contacts (N.O. or N.C.) to your control circuit.
    3. Adjust the relay setpoint to match your application requirements using the trim pot on the sensor.

LED indicators show sensor and relay status at a glance.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the ZS09P Zero Speed Switch used for?

A: The ZS09P monitors rotating equipment for over speed, under speed, and zero speed conditions. It can help protect conveyors, augers, bucket elevators, fans, crushers, mixers, and other machinery from damage caused by unexpected slowdowns or stops.

Q: Can the ZS09P switch a control circuit directly?

A: Yes. The ZS09P has isolated Form C relay contacts rated for up to 5 amps, allowing it to switch many control circuits directly without an additional relay or control box.

    Q: Does the ZS09P require a PLC?

A: No. The ZS09P operates as a self-contained speed monitoring device with the sensor and relay built into one unit. No programming or external controller is required for basic speed monitoring applications.

Q: How does the ZS09P detect shaft speed?

A: The sensor detects pulses from a rotating target such as a gear tooth, bolt head, key stock, magnetic disk, or magnet. The internal speed-sensing circuitry uses these pulses to determine whether the shaft is rotating at or above the selected speed.

Q: How do I set the ZS09P relay trip point?

A: Use the precision trim pot on the sensor to adjust the relay set point. The standard adjustment range is 1 to 100 RPM with one pulse per revolution. Custom setpoint ranges are available for other applications.

Q: What targets can the ZS09P detect?

A: The ZS09P can detect high-iron-content ferrous targets, such as gear teeth, bolt heads, and key stock, as well as Phares magnetic targets. Stainless steel and other materials with insufficient iron content will not provide reliable sensing.

Q: How far should the ZS09P be from the rotating target?

A: For a ferrous target, the sensing gap is typically 1/16 to 5/16 inch. The recommended gap is different for magnetic targets and depends on the specific magnet or magnetic disk being used.

Q: What happens when the machine slows below the set point?

A: When the detected speed reaches the under-speed or zero-speed condition, the ZS09P relay changes state. The relay LED turns off and the relay returns to its normal state, allowing the output to be used in a machine stop or alarm circuit.

Q: How quickly can the ZS09P respond to a speed problem?

A: The ZS09P is designed for rapid detection of changing shaft speed. In a typical conveyor application, it can respond quickly enough to help stop equipment before a developing problem causes additional damage.

Q: What voltage is required for the ZS09P?

A: The ZS09P is available in versions for either 120 VAC or 5–24 VDC. Select the appropriate model for the control voltage available at the installation.

Q: Where should the ZS09P be installed?

A: Mount the ZS09P at the point where equipment speed needs to be monitored, such as a conveyor pulley, gearbox shaft, auger, fan, or other rotating component. Aim the sensor at the selected rotating target and maintain the proper sensing gap.
